Fresh Malbec Juice and Skins for 2020!

It’s Time for Malbec!

We’re now taking orders for our 2020 crop of Malbec.

For the last 20 years we have been bringing in fresh Malbec juice and grapes from Chile. Last year we brought in over 5000L litres! Starting today, we are now taking orders for the 2020 Malbec. Once again we will be offering two versions of the Malbec.

What is Malbec?

Once a year with our partners in Chile we import a large batch of freshly harvested Malbec juice. Combining this raw, beautiful juice with our professional winemaking abilities and equipment results in an incredible wine. It tastes superb right away, but aging it takes it to the next level. We offer two versions of our Malbec. One is made from pure Malbec juice, and the other is made on fresh Malbec grape skins.

Those who order Malbec made from pure juice only will be treated to a full bodied, indigo coloured wine. It has dark jammy fruit flavours featuring notes of dark cherry, cocoa, and black pepper. It is something truly unique and absolutely worth trying.

About the 2019 Malbec

In the fall of 2019 it came to our attention that some of the wines made here at KJ during the spring of 2019 had some issues. The affected wines became "fizzy" and displayed what we believe to be refermentation. We did a careful analysis of the affected wines and concluded it was due to a faulty stabilizer that we use to protect your wines from such issues.

The wine most affected by the faulty stabilizer was the 2019 Malbec. Unfortunately a significant portion of that years batch was affected. We reached out to many of our clients, and sent a mass email regarding this. We were able to repair the majority of wine that was returned to us, and if not we were able to provide an alternative solution to our clients. If you have 2019 Malbec (or any wine) that is exhibiting any issues, please get in touch so that we can create a plan with you to rectify the situation.

It has been 6 months since we changed our procedures and we can now safely conclude that the issues in spring of 2019 had nothing to do with the Malbec and was solely due to the faulty stabilizer. We have changed suppliers for our stabilizer, and now test all wines produced in our facility to ensure they are properly stabilized. Given this, we are very confident in this years crop of Malbec and are extremely excited to put last years mishap behind us.

We greatly appreciate everyones understanding of this issue last year, we are lucky to have such incredible customers!

What is Different About Malbec Made on Skins?

Making Malbec on skins brings out more tannins, darker colour, and a greater intensity of flavours. Wines made in this fashion are designed to be cellared for years. I am still enjoying my rapidly diminishing stock of 2017 Malbec on skins, it has just hit its peak, especially after being open for an hour or two. It really illustrates how well the Malbec can age with time.

What is the Pricing?

The exchange rate between the USD and CAD continues to be challenging, but we were able this year to keep the pricing the same as last year. These prices include all service charges, taxes, and corks for wines made in store.
Malbec:  $89.99/11L or $505.93/66L (bulk order price break)
Malbec with Skins: $129.99/11L or $745.93/66L (bulk order price break)
Malbec juice for home winemakers: $65.98/11L
Malbec skins for home winemakers: $99.98/11L
Home winemakers, please take note. Our Malbec juice is extremely fresh and it needs to be picked up within a couple days of us receiving it in late March/early April. We can’t ship it either, so it has to be picked up.

How to order?

Simple! Let us know via InstagramFacebookEmail, or by calling or visiting us in store. Let us know what you would like and we will pre-order it for you. We will need you to visit us in store after ordering to finalize the order. The deadline to order is Saturday, April 11! After that, it will not be available until Spring 2021. We aim to have the Malbec in store by the beginning of April and we intend to have it ready to be bottled in mid June.

As many of you know, the COVID crisis in just a short couple of weeks has dramatically changed our world and how we interact with it.

At KJ, we have been keeping a close eye on events and words from our provincial and federal leaders. Amongst the staff and management, we have been trying to decide what is the best course of action going forward.

In the best interest of our clients, our staff and their families,

We have decided that we will be closing the doors to our store starting on Thursday, March 19.
